A2 Milk

From the moment I arrived in McLaren Vale, everyone was asking me if I’d tasted the A2 Milk from the Fleurieu Milk Company. I actually had never heard of A2 Milk and really wondered what everyone was talking about.

The next day while visiting the Willunga Farmers market, I caught up with Alan Steinert from the Fleurieu Milk Company who told me all about A2 milk and why it is different. The Fleurieu Milk Company is one of the only companies in Australia producing A2 milk.

Depending on the genetic make-up of the cow, they have different types of proteins called beta-casein. The most common are beta-casein A1 and beta-casein A2. Milk high in beta-casein A1 is being referred to as ‘A1 milk’ while milk high in beta-casein A2 is being called ‘A2 milk’. As a guide friesian cows produce mostly A1 milk, while Guernsey cows, sheep and goats produce mostly A2 milk.

Milk has often been blamed for health problems like heart disease, diabetes, asthma, eczema and even autism. But research into the health benefits of A2 Milk have shown the complete opposite with actual benefits of drinking A2 Milk opposed to A1 Milk.

For me I actually enjoyed the Fleurieu Milk Company’s Jersey Premium A2 Milk. Its full of flavour and has a rich creamy texture. Something that reminded me of my childhood.
