Dean & Deluca which is considered America’s premier specialty food retailer, will feature some of Australia’s best gourmet and artisanal food products from 13-20 July 2005. The Australian Food Week promotion will be held at Dean & Deluca’s flagship store located in lower Manhattan.

Last month when I visited New York, I spent a great deal of time foraging around the Dean & Deluca in Lower Manhattan which has a vast variety of freshly baked breads, spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh seafood, olives oils and cookbooks.

The Dean and Deluca Australian Food Week event is the result of an extensive Austrade-supported buyer visit to Australia in September 2004 and will feature products sourced from farms and factories in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and West Australia. Leah Rosenthal, Buyer for Dean & Deluca, said she based her selection on products that “speak of Australia".

Austrade’s New York-based food specialist, Beth Goslin, said having Dean & Deluca as a supporter of Australian gourmet foods is invaluable.“Dean & Deluca is a leading influencer within the specialty food world-both with consumers and with experts in the industry. This promotion will not only build sales for the companies involved, but will also help raise the profile of Australian foods in the US in general.

“With numerous tariff reductions on cheeses, nuts, olives and other specialty food items resulting from the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement, many Australian food exporters could pass these increased savings along to their American partners along the distribution chain. Ultimately, their products could be more competitive if offered at a lower price to US consumers"? Beth Goslin said.

Founded in 1977 by Joel Dean, Giorgio Deluca and Jack Ceglic with the opening of its flagship store in SoHo New York, Dean & Deluca quickly grew into a multi-channel retailer of gourmet and specialty foods, premium wines and high-end kitchenware with operations throughout the
United States and abroad.
