Tasmania has a great deal of hidden foods, wines and beers. One such beer is the American pale ale from Moo Brew. I first discovered the beers at Moo Brew a few years back while visiting Tasmania when I stumbled over the micro brewery at Moorilla Estate.
Apart from the American pale ale, Moo Brew produces three other unique beers; an American dark ale, Hefeweizen and a Czech pilsner. All the beers in the Mood Brew range are bottle in rather funky styled bottles, labelled with designs by Australian artist, John Kelly.
Upon opening the American Pale Ale, the nose is rather fruity with notes of apples and pears with elements of citrus and floral aromas. These flavours are also present in the taste, although being a typical American styled hop driven ale there is a long yet pleasant bitterness. Though, not as much as I had expected having tasted dozens of American Pale ales on my travels in the USA.There was also strong yeasty notes present.
The Moo Brew American Pale Ale had generally crisp and bold flavour characteristics, which are due to the beers not containing any preservatives and not being pasteurised. As such the beers are shipped cold to preserve them, so make sure you wack them straight into the chiller and don’t buy them from the pallet unchilled.
As with most pale ales from boutique or micro brewerys these days there was significant sediment at the bottom of my beer glass which for me was fine, but might put off drinkers who stick to commercially produced beers.
I did enjoy the bottled American pale ale, but not as much as the Moo Brew American Pale Ale on tap at the Moorilla Estate. But as I can’t be in Tasmania every day of the week the bottle Moo Brew American Pale Ale is great addition to the beer fridge for year round drinking.
