After living and working in Queensland for a few years, you can’t help but become a Bundaberg Rum drinker.
Bundy (as it’s known by those that drink it) is definitely my favourite mixed drink, most probably because of the late nights on Great Keppel where we had the infamous “Bundy with a Splash”.
Only seasoned bundy drinkers would remember the Bundaberg Black which was released a few years back. I could only ever buy it at Duty Free Stores and it was rather strong, yet remarkably smooth. I have a feeling I've still got a few bottles of the Bundaberg Black left in the cellar. Well now Bundaberg Rum has released the Bundaberg Rum 8 Year Old which replaces the Bundaberg Black.
Bundaberg Rum is made from cane which is harvested from Queensland, then crushed with the resulting molasses refined, then fermented and twice distilled. The Bundaberg Rum 8 Year Old is then matured in oak for 8 years, which means it was sealed on oak just after the millennium. Upon opening the bottle, you are confronted with a strong smokey caramel nose, which the company says represents the burning cane fields in the North Queensland. It does smell rather complex, but this would have to be the smoothest rum I’ve ever had and is something really special.
If you’re a bundy drinker, I would definitely recommend buying a few bottles of this limited release for years to come. The bottle I have is getting re-sealed and is off to the cellar to be reopened in a few years.
