Good friend and fellow chef, Charlie Ayers has been talking about his book, Eat Yourself Smart for a while now, so I was keen to get my hands on a copy when it hit the shelves. In America, it’s got a different title, so look out for; Food 2.0: Secrets from the Chef Who Fed Google.

Charlie is widely known as the former executive chef for Google Inc. Hired in the early days of Google by founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Charlie created the best corporate dining experience in Silicon Valley. There is no doubt his work has set the standard globally for corporate catering. Eat Yourself Smart is about the secrets of the Google kitchens where his team of five sous chefs and 150 employees in 10 cafés were serving 4,000 lunches and dinners daily.

But Eat Yourself Smart is much more than a story about cooking at a search engine. It’s about what Charlie is passionate about; which is using organic, raw, fermented and fresh. Charlie’s food is healthy, simple to prepare, yet flavoursome and allows for the ingredients to speak for themselves. And that’s what you’ll find throughout Eat Yourself Smart is lots of dishes which can best be described as “brainfood”.

Mostly all the recipes can be made quickly for busy people and some of my favourite dishes included the Asparagus and Mushroom Pizza, the Peppered Tuna Carpaccio, Sea Bass and Scallops with Minty Pea Sauce as well as the Spinach Latkes. All easy to make, look great, taste great and are healthy.

Eat Yourself Smart isn’t your usual cookbook. It’s about the food which significantly contributed to the culture of one of the most successful companies of our lifetime.
