Penfolds Bin 51 Riesling

When ever I choose a riesling at either the bottle shop or in a restaurant, I’ll always select one from South Australia and usually only wines from the Clare Valley or Eden Valley. Why? Simply, because both of these regions produce some of the best riesling wines in the country, if not the world. The rieslings of both these regions are well known for being crisp, floral and aromatic. So when I saw that winemaker, Penfolds had released the Penfolds Bin 51 Riesling 2007 from the Eden Valley I just had to try it.

Keep in mind that I enjoy a very cold, I mean very cold resiling and as such  I’ll usually wack it in the freezer for 15 minutes before opening. The Bin 51 Riesling was pale coloured which is typical of most Riesling wines. The nose reminded me of a freshly chopped fruit salad with passionfruit and apple notes. On tasting, the Penfolds Bin 51 Riesling was pure delight with a crisp and zesty character upfront then fresh fruit flavours on the palate with a clean and pleasing finish.

This Penfolds Bin 51 Riesling 2007 will go well with steamed or grilled fresh seafood like scallops, prawns, yabbies, marron and lobster or mild and spicy Asian dishes. It’ll also go well with chicken and pork dishes.

The winemaker suggest that it I’ll cellar for about 10 years, but I don’t think it’ll last that long in my collection. I think it’s good now and for the next few years.

The Penfolds Bin 51 Riesling 2007 is a premium Australian riesling definitely worth trying.
