Torbreck Estate is located in South Australia’s Barossa Valley and is the brainchild of winemaker David Powell. David named the winery 'Torbreck' after a forest in Scotland where he worked as a lumberjack. Torbreck Estate Winery is now producing some of Australia’s most innovative boutique wines.

I was first introduced to Torbreck Estate a few years ago by well know Australian chef Tony Bilson while we were both in Shanghai looking for a restaurant to lease. The restaurant never got off the ground but my relationship with Torbreck Estate was forged and since then I’ve tried a great deal of their wines, but my favourite has to be The Bothie.

Well to start off, The Bothie is an Australian sweet wine but it’s a sweet wine unlike any you’ve ever tasted. Its a Muscat Blanc which is made in the style of a Muscat de Beaumes de Venise and to be honest I have no idea what a Muscat de Beaumes de Venise is, but I’ll try and explain how it looks, smells and tastes.

The Bothie has a really pale yet golden colour and upon opening has real rockmelon or lychee note. The wine is perfectly balanced and has a mild palate of honey, strawberry and mandarin flavours with a light finish. Although sweet, The Bothie isn’t anything like your usual desert wine or sticky. It’s a light styled drinking swine which could actually be served with a cheese or seafood starter. It goes well with lighter styled deserts like parfaits, crème caramels, brulee, mousse or fresh fruit salad. But isn’t a dessert wine which should be served with chocolate, cakes or puddings as it will be easily overpowered.

My greatest problem with the Bothie is that it can be hard to find and on numerous occasions I’ve driven to the other side of Sydney to secure the last few bottles of the vintage. Overall get your hands on this great tasting and uniquely Australian styled dessert wine.
